2. Where the money actually goes
- Sipadan permits (RM800–1,500) can exceed a whole budget tier alone — read the permit guide before budgeting around diving.
- Kinabatangan 2D1N (~RM750+) is the priciest single item most travellers buy — worth it, but plan for it.

Is Borneo expensive vs Bali or Thailand?
Mid-range Borneo runs 20–40% above equivalent Bali days — distances are bigger and eco-lodges cost more than beach hostels. Budget Borneo is still very doable.
Cash or card?
Cards in cities, cash for tamu markets, rural fuel and small lodges. Carry RM500–1,000 outside KK/Kuching.
