Green turtles nest after dark. Day boats don't exist for this — the experience is a ranger knocking near midnight, red torches on the beach, a nesting female, and (in season) a hatchling release at dawn. Book the night or skip the islands entirely.
2. What the Night Costs
Chalet packages bundle boat transfers ex-Sandakan, meals, park fees and ranger guiding — typically a few hundred ringgit per person. Capacity is hard-capped by beds, which is why dry-season weekends sell out weeks ahead. Shoulder months trade guaranteed sightings odds for easy bookings.
3. The Ranger Protocol
Nesting watches run on radio calls, not schedules: no flash, no white light, no touching, whisper discipline on the beach. Hatchling releases happen when clutches are ready — dawn, usually, sometimes midnight. The rangers' conservation talk before dinner is genuinely excellent; don't skip it for sunset photos.
4. Pairing the Trip
Classic combo: Sepilok + Sun Bears by day, Turtle Islands overnight, Labuk Bay proboscis monkeys as buffer. Three Sandakan days, zero wasted motion. Book Sepilok and Selingan nights back-to-back early — both cap numbers.
5. Booking Windows
Peak (dry) season: reserve the moment flights are fixed. Shoulder: a week out usually works. Monsoon: boats cancel in heavy seas — keep a flex day and travel insurance that covers rearranged legs. Confirm pickup (Sandakan waterfront vs hotel) in writing.
