2. Add the Sun Bears
The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre sits adjacent to Sepilok — same trip, second species, minimal extra time. Skipping it to "save an hour" is the classic regret; the bears are active midday when orangutans rest.
3. Guided vs DIY Costs
DIY: Grab both ways + both entry fees + lunch — roughly half a guided price, with all logistics on you. Guided (~$70–120 range for full-day Sandakan tours): transfers, timing guarantees, lunch handling. First-timers on a tight schedule should go guided; repeat visitors DIY happily.
4. What to Bring
Leeches after rain (socks over trousers), rain shell year-round, binoculars for canopy spotting, cash for entry fees and the excellent canteen lunch. No flash, no feeding, no touching — the rangers enforce it and the apes notice everything.
5. Stay or Day-Trip?
Sandakan works as a 2-night base (Sepilok + Sun Bears day one, Labuk Bay proboscis monkeys or Turtle Islands staging day two). Jungle lodges near Sepilok suit dawn-chorus people. Don't day-trip from Kota Kinabalu — that's a flight, not a drive.
